WTF is wrong in Hawaii? $$$

I took this photo the other day while walking around Kailua-Kona. Thought I should post it and ask the question; Why are mainland gas prices falling much faster than Hawaii gas prices? It's simply ridiculous, someone is laughing all the way to the bank $$$.

When I travelled on vacation back east during mid-July I left Kona when gas prices were at $4.61. When I arrived in Ohio it was $4.11 and went up to about $4.18 then started down. When I departed Ohio two weeks later July 30th Ohio gas was at $3.69. Arriving Kona on same day gas was at $4.72 and today only down to about $4.65. Today's highest gas in Kona area was $4.71 at Tessaro on Queen K Hwy. I also feel sorry for anyone who needs to fill-up with Diesel.

If anyone is planning a trip to Kona Hawaii soon or visiting for Ironman Hawaii in October, be fore-warned, gas prices as well as grocery prices are sky-rocketing out of control. We all know Hawaii is more expensive than mainland but this is the biggest discrepancy I've seen in gas and grocery prices since living on the islands for over 14 years. Sad thing is that local businesses are not adjusting pay scales/wages to meet the clearly high cost of living in paradise.

Oh and I noticed a gallon of milk the other day was at $7.99/gl (I don't drink milk anymore) and banana's were selling at about $1.29/lb. (thank god they grow in my yard!) Just an example but I'm sure if you drove around town to other stores you may find better deals. But who has the time or wants to spend more gas trying to find the best deal on one item etc....

Drowning in Kona!

Are you kidding me! 7.99 for MILK. That's it, I'm packing all my milk with me prior to coming over. I wonder how much I can fit in my suitcase. Forget it - I'm renting a cow. Can you do that over there? Thanks for stopping by to say hello! I always wondered who she was talking about on her blog & why she called you "Dolphin Boy" - I guess that's your name! Ha! Take care!

Come shop on Oahu. Gas is down to the 4.20s and milk is ONLY $6.

I saw Hurley yesterday eating healthy stuff at Down to Earth and thought of you, Lost boy.

Yeah, gas is a little cheaper on Oahu, but at my local station you can only by the regular stuff, seriously, the prices have gotten so bad that they don't even stock the premium gas anymore. I'm planting a couple banana trees in my back yard for future consumption. Costs have gotten crazy. The price of paradise I guess.

Holy moly Batman!

gallon of gas in Sheldon, IA $3.49gallon of milk $2.50.

See, living in small town Iowa isn't all bad but remember the nearest Starbucks is 60 minutes away!

First, I'm trying to get over that Katie is 60 minutes away from the nearest Starbucks. Do you even have Starbucks in Kona? Aren't you all known for that fantastic Kona blend? And is it that good that it costs $25/pound here? Don't tell me if it is because I'm dumb enough to buy it.
I guess that's the price you pay for living in paradise. I think the price of gas on Niles-Cortland Rd is like $3.13. But you wouldn't have that BEAUTIFUL ocean at your doorstep (just Conneaut Lake or the Shenango Dam!).

WAAAAAAAH, CRY me a river!

Okay... here is your choice:

1) Live on an island where most stuff is shipped in (that means pay a little more) and you get GREAT sunsets, cool people, more relaxed life, ect...

OR

2) Live in the middle of a giant landmass FAR from the ocean and have cheap milk...

now quit crying' DB and go watch the sunset!

Prices at Costco are lower in Kona than in Kaohsiung. Why use gas when a bike will do most of the time? There are many free things in Kona, swimming in the bay, watching the sunsets and spending time with friends. Of course, food and rent are expensive but that I guess is the price one has to pay to have the kind of fun that is unique to Hawai'i. One can reduce costs a lot by making one's own drinks instead of buying them in flashy establishments. Just enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. I am starting to miss the place.

I guess I'll have to put more money in the bank before my trip to Kona in 7 weeks... But it's just money-the chance to visit the big island and race the Ironman...well you know how it goes "Priceless"

Any chance you can point me to the best place to swim with dolphins?
