What the.....

WHY ME?

When I start a job you can bet I've done my homework on the company and inquired about or negotiated a more favorable wage/salary. Over the years I've learned that most everything is negotiable and it's worth to ask for more pay after about two interviews. It's also safe to request an offer letter from your new employer explaining in detail your rate of pay that both parties agreed to along with benefits package and any other stipulations such as bonus and vacation time etc.

My recent interview process was a little frustrating. By this I mean, the employer really didn't answer my questions but simply "beat around the bush". A very important question I asked was to see the job description of the position I was interviewing for along with what type of person are you looking for to fill this position? They couldn't provide me with a job description and really never defined the "type" of person they wanted for the position. So with this being said, it automatically raises red flags for me. As I continue through the process I question the rate of pay for this Management position. When they explain to me it will start off in the range of $8-$12 per hour until I pass certain levels I bite my tongue and swallow my pride. I don't know about anyone else but to hold a managers position in Hawaii at $12 per hour doesn't even get you to $30k per year! Long story short I have a bad taste in my mouth about this job but they offer it to me without offer letter or clear communication of job description. Long story short, this is what transpires my first few days of work;

  • Clean men's locker room toilet after someone left droppings on seat and floor area
  • Toilet overflows flooding area while I plunge away soaking my good running shoes.
  • Ceiling collapses around some machines as I was ready to clock out at end of day (10pm) A/C in roof breaks and water pours onto floor along with ceiling tiles. Luckily no one was working in this area when it collapsed. I stay and mop up flooded floor, dirty towels and mops, clean machines. finally leave around 1115pm.
  • Men's toilet needs cleaned again on different day. Someone misses toilet and makes deposit on seat and floor again. I have to clean it up again.
  • Collect dirty towels and take out garbage.
  • Clean doors, windows & mirrors
  • Tried learning unorganized format of front desk check in/membership processes
  • Trying to reason with strange management philosophy of owners

Okay, so perhaps this is a working job description. Since they don't have a written copy of one. However, after being hired they do have a checklist I need to follow in order to pass level one. Most of the above are not mentioned on this list. To say the least I'm furious. I understand that with a new job comes certain challenges and I have to learn how to confront these challenges. But is it wrong for me to really be upset with what they are telling me to do with these "shit job" duties that were not mentioned to me at all during interview process but seem to fall to me or the "new guy" thing going on. I guess what I'm saying is I've already swallowed my pride by accepting this job how much more can I handle or take. I'm not fresh out of high school and this is exactly how I feel my first week on the job. I am a business professional and have some serious experience with business operations and management and I'm certainly not cut-out for this type of job at this pay rate!

I took the job because I needed a job and quick pay check. Ideally I want to own and operate my own business one day but for now I need a consistent paycheck. Apparently I didn't do my homework about this job or company. I cut corners cause I needed the job. Really took it without my questions answered or clear understanding what I've gotten into. Have I made a mistake? Can this be corrected? Will I get answers? Lesson learned? Pride damaged?

I need to asses the situation and react appropriately.

Sorry, but you are too good for that type of job...I say tell them to go and stick their plunger where the sun does not shine!!!! That is a type of job you give to someone that is a young kid, not some kind of professional grown man!! I say look for a better job and bag that one!!! Hang in there Pat :)

I've found it's easiest to find a good job when you have a job to start with. And the worse the job you have the more motivated you are to find a better one. Good luck!

Oh boy Pat... everyone has had jobs that aren't too cool or their dream job, but it is a pay check and you need one of those. Hang in there till you find what you WANT, till then you have what you NEED(a job). I worked there too...and I had ugly feelings about the place, BUT there are some really cool positives about it... think on those till you get through it and onto something else...
Wishing ya the best!

If you need quick cash, go to Outback and be a bus boy. If you consider yourself a business executive who is capable of running his own business, then do that, even if you start by collecting recyclable PET bottles. Kiyosaki would rather have slept in his car than take a "safe" job with a paycheck. I wouldn't scoop up crap to earn my living, and I don't see why you should either. Don't act weak. Just tell you boss that you're moving on to something much better.

Jeez Pat. At first I thought this was going to be a joke and end up with you working at Mickey Ds or something.

Hang in there. There's always a new day on the horizon. My last job I only lasted 6 months I hated it so much. But hey, I ended up in Hawaii after that so sometimes a bad situation motivates us to go beyond what we would normally and end up in a way better place.

And besides, you need to move to Hollywood and start writing comedy, man.

I don't have a job as such, but I am always busy with work during my waking hours (which are not many with my swimming). I got asked out for lunch tomorrow with some people in Taipei I have been doing some work for. I guess being a nerd has helped me in the work market. All the best.

DB, you deserve way better! I bet you can get a management position at an SB's or JJ now that pays better and where you wouldn't have to do that crazy stuff. Sorry! Hang in there, I know it sucks and it is rough but soon you will find something WAY BETTER! Look for it and you will find it....I know it!
